We meet every Friday morning at the trailhead at 9:00. Most of the trails we hike are within 25 miles of the center, although two or three times a year we go to places that take all day. A typical hike is 4 to 6 miles. We are usually through in time to go to a local restaurant for lunch or, if the location we're at has a picnic area, we'll bring a picnic lunch.
FOR BEGINNING HIKERS: Many of the trails we hike are rough and rocky with moderate to steep hills. A couple of the trails have uphills that may go on for over a mile. We STRONGLY recommend that you bring water, wear a good pair of hiking shoes and use hiking pole(s). We also recommend that you eat a good breakfast, bring a first aid kit, insect repellent, sunglasses and energy bars. Wear clothing that is appropriate for the current and expected weather. You may want to bring an extra shirt to change in to after the hike. If you are new to hiking join us on the days we hike Iron Hill; the trail we've designated as “easy”. If you’d like to check out some of the trails we hike on your own, links to most of them are on the “Places We Hike” tab. You may also want to check out the “Turtle Walking Club”. This club meets at the Senior Center once a week and walks trails that are easy (mostly paved) and usually less than three miles.
You will also be required to sign a release form before you can hike with us. These forms are kept at the Senior Center. Just ask for the Hiking Club release form.
Basically, we are a group of people (mostly retired) who enjoy each other's company and meet to go hiking once a week. There are many beautiful trails in North Georgia to hike. We hope that you will come join us.
